Is Chemotherapy Advisable For Low Cell Count In Women With Breast Cancer?

My doctor called me and told me I had a low cell count as a result of my PAP check and now wants me to see the GYN/OBGY doctor. Do I need to worry with my past history of breast cancer with chemo and radiation? Does this need to be repeated as is very painful?

Hello,

First of all do not panic. In patients with history of cancer, even after treatment there are chances of recurrence or spread of the cancer to other organs. Although low white blood cell count needs a careful analysis before coming to any conclusion. There are different causes of it, and with history of cancer, it is very essential. How many years back you underwent chemotherapy and radiation therapy? It would be better if you mention your age. PAP smear is done to check any abnormal growth of cells in cervix.

I suggest, follow your doctor's advice and consult a gynecologist. After the gynecologist's opinion further management can be planned. The doctors that are doing your follow ups will be able to guide you better on treatment plan as they are well aware of your history. So need of chemotherapy or radiation therapy will be dependent on the underlying cause that led to PAP smear results and low white blood cell count.Apart from these options there are other options like surgery and again it depends on the cause. Discuss these with your gynecologist for clarity.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
