Is Chemotherapy Necessary After A Bilateral Mastectomy?
Recently had a bilateral Mastectomy with a DIEP with Flap and still recovering, no additional cancer found in lymph nodes and advised cancer free, now advised I need to go for chemo a 2 yr regime because I was HER2 positive before surgery. If I am free of cancer why can’t I be put on an oral pill for say 5 yrs.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Vasudha's Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
Her 2 tests are positive (+'ve) thus showing possibility of genetic predisposal to breast cancer. Though at present all the affected tissue has been removed & you are declared cancer free at present. Because of the Her 2 +'ve results, it's necessary to have preventive chemotherapy to prevent redevelopment in long run.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale
