Is Childbirth Advisable When Diagnosed With OCD, Bipolar And Schizoaffective Disorder?
Hello!! My name is Rainbow40. I was diagnosed with schizoaffective disorder at age 21. I currently have the same diagnosis along with bipolar and obbsessive compulsive disorder. My question to you is my husband wants children. I do not because of genetics and the environment he provides for me. If he ca not properly provide for me how in the world is he going to be able to take care of a child?! I don t want to leave him, he is not a terrible person. He just doesn t understand my point of view. What should I do? Please help with this dilema!! Thank You!!
While patients with OCD, bipolar and schizoaffective disorder can indeed live lives that are very normal and have a high quality of life, one should absolutely never put a child into the world to please others. Pregnancy, birth and caring for a baby are all very stressful, and only if you feel completely ready and you feel that your support structures are perfectly in place should you go through with a pregnancy.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Maria Riechel-Sarup, General & Family Physician
