Is Chronic Pain In The Joints Due To A Progesterone Injection?

Iam 73 and always have been active; although suffer from arthritis. Recently, I had an injection of progesterone to help my libido......since then, I have had terrible joint pain in hips, down left leg, and in right elbow. Extremely painful. Had an MRI and consult with spinal surgeon. He suggested injections for pain and said he thinks pain stems from arthritis. However, all this had gotten extremely worse since the progesterone injection and I ve also gained 6 lbs...feels like I m retaining fluid. What do you think or recommend. Thanks...Jane Sanders

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

Progesterone is known to cause fluid retention and gain in weight as side effects. Long term therapy with its use can affect bones by causing osteoporosis, which could result in pain in bones and joints. However, it doesn't cause arthritis. Kindly consult your doctor for clinical evaluation and appropriate management.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
