Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a 70 year old brother in law being considered for pacemaker implant in relation to congestive heart failure. He is also diabetic and a smoker. Despite physician advice to stop smoking he takes up smoking again daily. I think getting a pacemaker while having high probability of continuing smoking is ill advised and contraindicated. What do you think?
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
He has to get the pacemaker, even if he smokes, because this procedure doesn't depend from smoking but from the heart disease that he has. Smoking is contraindicated in every heart patient and not only.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
