My mother in law is 90 and has been in the hospital , including icu all week. Diagnosis: diverticulosis and is still bleeding . Has had colonoscopy, upper and lower GI , ct scan. She has a second active bleed. Hemoglobin goes from 8.6 down to 7 within 8 hours. Has received 8 units of packed red blood cells but now is so weak and Her coloring does not look good . They want to do another colonoscopy on Monday to defect douce of bleeding. We are worried she won t make it through procedure. What should we do?

Hello,

You have to get a cardiology clearance before colonoscopy in the elderly individual.

Generally, it is short and simple procedure and does not cause any complications, however for elderly individuals it might cause cardiac problems.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
