Is Constipation After TKR Surgery A Concern?

Hi, I had a left total knee replacement on Wednesday June 8th. One year ago I had a vertical gastric sleeve surgery to lose weight which I did. My concern is that I have not had a bowel movement as yet. I really don t have an urge to go. I have been eating and drinking and taking stool softeners and last night 2 Senokot.S. Should I be concerned if not uncomfortable? I am taking Oxycodone 10 mg every 3-6 hours.

Hi,

Based on the history you have shared, oxycodone may be contributing for your constipation too. However, other causes like decreased mobility and electrolyte disturbance like low potassium can also cause decreased gut motility.

If you are still feeling no urge, it's better to get consulted with your primary surgeon and get bowel sounds examined and stool softeners and motility agents may be continued.

Castor oil drops or lactulose may be used too. Glycerine suppositories may help with decreasing discomfort or hard defecation after relief of constipation.

Of problem persists, liquid diets and X-ray abdomen may be needed to rule out subacute intentional obstruction.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
