Is Cutting The Hematoma The Right Thing To Do Post A Shin Injury?

I injured my shin while on a excerise bike. Went to Mash Clinic. Doctor tried to drain the hematoma with several needles, when this didn't work he cut it with a knife. Was this the right thing to do. That was a month ago, it is still bleeding and very painful

Hi and welcome to HCM, thanks for posting your query..
I read your question completely and have understood it well..
I am really sorry for your health condition.
I being a surgeon, we encounter a lot of such cases and believe me the shin area is generally prone for such notorious problems.

I will discuss two things
1. If the doctor was right in opening
2. What to do next!?

I can say that the doctor who drained by cutting it open was very much right..
Because he initially tried to aspirate with needles and when it did not work, he went for that option.
It had to be done, or else the hematoma would have got infected and you might have landed In a bigger problem.

But how bad is the wound and how big is the wound cut open, I need further information.

Second thing, now how to heal.
Generally, it should heal in 4 to 6 weeks of time.
Is there any skin loss? And bone seen?
If answer is NO, then you need not worry. It's a matter of time.
The bleeding will stop and wound will get closed.
Please undergo a regular sterile dressing procedure.
Eat high protein diet and be positive, it will have positive effect on the wound healing.

I hope this helps you, in case you need any further help. Please let me know.
Take care and God bless.
