Is Darkening Of The Toenails In A Type 2 Diabetic A Cause For Concern?

59 year old male with type 2 diabetes, 300 lbs, 5 9 . Noticed that my toenails, next to large toe, have turned a darker color than normal. Looks like bruising. Also on left large toenail there is some darkening starting on the side next to the darkened toenail. Originally this was only on the left foot for about 6 months or longer only on the one toe. I thought I must have damaged the nail. Now it seems to be starting on the other foot. I have an appointment with my docter in 2 weeks for regular checkup regarding diabetes. No pain or numbness but it has me concerned.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about a 59 year old, diabetic, started with darkening of toe nails as mentioned, no pain or numbness.
Diabetes causes changes all over the body including the blood vessels.
The most probable cause of darkening of the toenails can be gradual occlusion of peripheral blood circulation, meaning the diameter of the small blood vessels get narrowed due to secondary effect of diabetes.
Hence I would advise you hte following:
Consult a Vascular Surgeon for proper clinical evaluation, examination and investigations like color doppler of all limbs, tests of blood pertaining to the disease to know the exact cause.
This will allow to get started on appropriate management.
Good control of diabetes is very important.
No smoking.
Start exercises.
Reduce weight.
All this will help in a long run.
Take care.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
