Is Dental Surgery Advisable After A Denosumab Injection Shot?
about two weeks ago I had an injection of denosumab and now I have a severe toothache and need to have it extracted. I was told that I shouldn t have dental surgery while on this medication. I don t believe I can wait to have my tooth extracted for an extended period. do you believe it will be safe for me to have this tooth pulled?
As per your complain Denosumab is given to patients wit Osteoporosis but it is associated with a condition known as Osteonecrosis and in case if any dental treatment is carried out after injection of Denosumab then it can have deleterious side effects leading to jawbone necrosis..
As you just had the injection 3 weeks back, therefore you should NOT proceed for getting the tooth extraction done as you are at a very hisk of Osteonecrosis..
The effect of the drug starts fading gradually and reduces significantly in 6 month and about almost completely in an year, so keeping in mind atleast 3 months gap should be kept and even more if possible to prevent complication..
In case if you cannot wait for extraction to be postponed you can consult an Oral Surgeon and get evaluated and a thorough clinical evaluation of bone density should be done along with other tests and then only you should proceed further..
Hope this helps..
Regards.
