Is Depression The Cause For Heart Stroke In An Elderly Person?
My 85 year old father had a stroke...he has high blood pressure, diabetes, and has had a heart attack...he has by-pass surgery in 1990 and a couple of stents put in since...could the disappointment (stress) of me not spending the night with him on a recent visit or eating a meal at his house cause him to have the stroke?
The triggers that increase the chances of stroke are anxiety & stress. Stress includes chronic illness, unhappiness, emotional factors like depression, grief, guilt, low self-esteem, etc).
Get your father physically examined by a heart specialist. Get CBC, lipid profile, X-ray, Echocardiography, ECG, etc done to rule out any developing CAD. Get hi treated at the earliest. Help him maintain optimum BP & blood sugar level at all cost.
Yes, stress can trigger stress. Try to keep your father happy & out of stress. Don't keep him waiting for you, don't let him get depressed.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
