My 3 year old son has a blood glucose of 155. We were at a birthday party where he had soda, cake, ice cream, etc... It seems he has been urinating more often and a lot today. We tested him with a new lancet on my husbands glucometer. Do I need to be concerned with a family history of diabetes?
Family history increases the risk of diabetes but it is not a certainty only an increased chance, he may not become a diabetic.
The blood sugar reading soon after the use of cake, ice-cream and soda would be increased in anyone but would normally return to normal.
Diagnosis of diabetes is based on abnormal fasting or 2 hour blood sugars or the use of HbA1c.
If you are concerned regarding his symptoms and potential for diabetes, it would be best to take him to see his doctor for an assessment. There are other causes for increased urination such as increased fluid intake, infection.
I hope this helps
