Is Diastolic Dysfunction The Same Or Different From Diastolic Heart Failure?
Is diastolic dysfunction the same or different from diastolic heart failure? I was diagnosed with diastolic heart failure in March 2008 in Des Moines...now I have moved to a subarb of Waterloo and now they( the Drs here ) tell me I have diastolic dysfunction...I have bad coughing fits if I lay flat and a ton of foot and ankle edema as well...I have high blood pressure and I have had a bypass and have had an artificial heart valve replaced plus Im a type 2 insulin dependent diabetic...the Drs in DSM and Waterloo have both told me the muscle in my heart is hardened and stiff and its allowing blood to pool in my heart ( they also diagnosed an aortic aneuyism of my desending artery a while back ) Thank you!!
Both are somewhat similar; when diastolic dysfunction become severe enough to cause blood pooling in left ventricle, this causes back pressure in lungs to cause fluid accumulation there (pulmonary edema). This is the stage of diastolic heart failure.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
