Is Difficult Swallowing Common Post Cervical Surgery?
Since cervical surgery (anterior fusion of all but C 1 and 2), I ve had difficulty swallowing liquids. i.e. tend to aspirate liquids but bolus food seems much better. Also throat seems irritated in spite of 5 tablets of Diflucan (7 day each? Surgery was 5-22? I ve had IV fluids twice for dehydration. It is some better since I m able to carefully swallow tiny sip of water without aspiration. Is this normal?
Hi. What you are experiencing is a common occurrence after a cervical surgery such as yours. There is a small nerve that supplies innervation to the vocal cords (recurrent laryngeal nerve) will sometimes not function for several months after neck surgery because of retraction during the procedure. This complication can cause temporary hoarseness. Retraction of the esophagus can also produce difficulty with swallowing, which usually resolves within days but can last weeks to months(6-9 months). Rarely, it can result in permanent difficulty swallowing. You should be fine in a few months. Nerves can take a while to recover. Vitamin B12 will help in faster nerve regeneration.
