Is Doctor Consultation Advisable For Nose Bleeds In A Child?

Hi there, My daughter is 10 years old and she has been having nose bleeds on and off for the past approx 6 years. However just before the weekend she woke up with a headache and has been feeling quite dizzy too when she stands up. She is also getting more regular nose bleeds now, anything up to 5 a day for the past few days, some quite heavy. I have brought her to the doctor about these in the past and the cream she prescribed did stop the bleeds for a time, however they seem to be back with a vengeance. Should I be worried? She is extremely active in that she does gymnastics 6 days a week for approx 2.5 hours each day, however she doesn t seem to be affected during this. Can you please advise me if I should bring her to see a doctor or to the emergency room? Many thanks, Deirdre

Hello,

Yes, you should see a doctor again. If the bleeding is severe and is not stopping or if she is giddy, then take her to the Emergency Room (ER). The cause of the bleed needs to be diagnosed and treated.

I recommend:
- An ENT consult
- Blood tests (complete blood count, clotting profile, liver function tests)
- A CT scan or an MRI of the face and sinuses. Brain as well if necessary
- An endoscopy if required
- Pinch at the bridge of the nose and apply ice to control the bleed

Make her lie down with head tilted slightly backward. She should avoid swallowing a blood that comes into her throat and spit it out. This helps avoid gastritis. Based on these we can find the cause of bleed.

As she is bleeding more now, anemia needs to be checked and treated too. She should avoid putting fingers in her nose. If the atmosphere is dry, give her more water (warm) and use humidifier at home.
