Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is Ejection Fraction Value Of 18 A Cause For Concern?
I just had an economic done and my ejection fraction is 18. I had eschemic heart disease in January of 2010. I had 4 valves replaced with open heart surgery. I have a pace maker and defibulator. I don t expect an exact amount of time that I have to live. I just want a ball park figure. It is as if doctors are afraid to answer that question. Do I have 2 4 6 or 10 years to live. I also have copd. Please give me some kind of answer. When I had my first eco in 2010 it was 27. Now it s 18. The doctor only said my heart is getting weaker which I already knew. I take carvedolo. I don t like being kept in the dark.
Life expectancy cannot be exactly calculated from ejection fraction but EF as low as 18% (normal 55-75%) is really of concern. Co-morbid condition like COPD adds only to poor prognosis.
If you want to live long avoid exacerbating factor-like lung infection such as pneumonia or acute exacerbation of COPD, undue exertion, extra salt, etc.
A 2016 study estimated that only about half of people who develop heart failure live beyond 5 years after being diagnosed.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
