Is Elevated Platelet Count A Symptom Of Cancer?

I Would like VERY MUCH to know why my Platelet count, (on a scale of 140-400) Is over 800? I have recently been put on Hydrea to MAYBE,AS A side effect Might lower my platelet count? Do I have or can I have cancer,of some sort? I have not been given a Diagnoses as yet as to what is causing the over production of Platelets , and could it (fingers crossed) be cancer, and other than just taking hydrea , what should be done?

Hello,

The first question is why are you using hydrea? Your doctor has prescribed it or else? You didn't mention age in the query.

Most of the times, thrombocytosis (elevated platelets) occurs because of reactive conditions and not cancer. And increased platelets; essential thrombocythemia, a malignant condition occurs in the elderly individual.

Even if your hemoglobin is low, there will be a reflex increase in platelets. Just mere presence of increased platelets doesn't mean that cancer is there. It has correlated according to the context.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Siddartha
