Epidural
steroids are medications given via injection to reduce or treat inflammation, especially for
low back pain and joint pain. Epidural steroids have been in use since 1952 and are still an important component in pain management for
sciatica and low back pain. Epidural steroids are often given to patients who suffer from large amounts of pain in order to enable them to perform rehabilitative stretching and other forms of exercise without discomfort. One advantage of epidural injections is that they are delivered right into the source of the pain, unlike oral steroids and painkillers which take 30 minutes or 1 hour to work and may carry some unpleasant side effects. Aside from this epidural steroids can also help flush out inflammatory
proteins and chemicals and prevents the inflammation which can make the pain worse. Your doctor is the one who can give you an epidural injection. Patients have to lie face down on an x-ray or exam table and using the x-ray, your doctor will guide a tiny needle to the epidural space, an area on your spine where the medication needs to be delivered. The whole process can take as long as 15 minutes. Patients with a very low tolerance for pain may be given a sedative to make them calm prior to the procedure. Although the side effects of epidural injections, like infection, bleeding, increased blood sugar and dural tears are relatively rare, they should be given immediate medical attention once they occur.
