Is False Positive Urine Alcohol Possible After Having Port Flushed?
I may be on the wrong site. I need to know if there is any evidence or report of false positive urine alcohol tests after having a port flushed ...also had phlebotomy from it, so was wiped with alcohol swab several times, and the port is just below my left clavicle. I obviously inhaled significant fumes. I had a false positive (at least I know that I had not consumed any alcohol by mouth) urine alcohol test two days after I had the port flushed and had the phlebotomy (for hemochromatosis). Also I have diabetes that is under control, and may have been a bit dehydrated...
Hi! Welcome to HCM! Ethyl Glucuronide is usually measured in these tests as it is a direct metabolite of beverage alcohol and its presence in urine may be used to detect recent alcohol consumption. The presence of EtG in urine is a definitive indicator that alcohol was ingested. If measurable ethanol is detected (greater than .04 gm%) in the urine, along with it in excess of 250 ng/mL, then this is very strong evidence that alcohol was consumed. However incidental exposure to the food product, hygiene products, mouthwash, or medications (cough syrups) can produce EtG. Hope this helps!
