Is Flying Safe While Only 15% Of Heart Is Working?

Hi doctor, my mum is being told that her heart is working only 15% of the total capacity. Doctors told May be couple of years before that her heart is week but this news is bit of heart breaking for me. She was going really good from last few months but suddenly she got paralysis attack and effected her voice. Doctors have done all the tests like urine, Eco, blood etc and they found some blood clots in her brain and told us that because her heart is working only 15% and those blood clots, she got that attack. She is improving now but my worry is whether we can do something else to get her going a bit batter or she has to cope with all this pain. And one more thing is whether she can fly because my mum and dad are planning to fly to Australia from India within next couple weeks? Your suggestion appreciated . MANOJ

Hi welcome to HCM.
Cardiac reserve as low as 15% can produce rapid deleterious effects in presence of precipitating factors.Air travel in your case is relatively contraindicated in my opinion.High altitudes are known to cause fluid retention in the lungs leading to pulmonary edema and sudden acute respiratory embarrasement. She can also run the run the risk of clot dislodgement and subsequent pulmonary embolisation. Its very good to avoid the travel right now.Consult your cardiologist for further queries.
Thank you
