Is General Anesthesia The Best Option When Undergoing Open Hernia Repair Surgery ?

I am going to have an open hernia repair surgery next month. I will be meeting with an anesthesiologist Per- operatively. But, wanted to know if this were a question that I could ask-- if this surgery can be done with local anesthetic with iv conscious sedation like Versed and avoid deep sedation with propofol? Or, is propofol the best and safest way to go? I just don t like the idea of a general anasthetic, particularly because under stressful situations my blood pressure increases.

It would have been better if you have mentioned the site of hernia surgery. If it is inguinal hernia then spinal anesthesia is one of the best option for you unless there are any contraindications like difficulty in lying down for long time, obstructive sleep apnea etc. If there are no contraindications then triple nerve block with conscious sedation with dexmedetomidine will be one of the other best options for a inguinal hernia surgery.

Before planning the anesthesia your comorbidities should also be taken into consideration. If it is a incisional hernia in abdomen involving bowel manipulation then general anesthesia with epidural for postoperative pain relief will be a good option. Regional anesthesia with sedation is better than general anesthesia for inguinal hernias. But if you have to go for general anesthesia due to any contraindications then Propofol as an inducing drug is a good option.
