Is Getting A Tattoo Advisable For A Lupus Patient?

I would appreciate your professional advice. My question is to do with getting a tattoo since I have lupus. I m not having a flare up and am controlled well with meds - methotrexate and hydrochloroquine. I am 68 years old, female, with SLE since 2000, no problems. Thank you. Debbie

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello!

Keeping ypur age and past medical history regarding lupus in mind, I would advise you to get a clearance from your PCP regarding this. Lupus being an autoimmune disease, can affect the bleeding time and clotting time and also people affected with lupus are known to have low levels of immunity which may make you more prone to infections. If you are on any medications like immunosuppressants, steroids or blood thinners, the tattoo may have to be done under caution. Be sure to keep the tattoo artist well informed about the medical conditions.
Hope this helps!
