Is Gouty Arthritis A Side Effect Of Long Term Usage Of Atenolol?

I have been taking Atenolol (now 50mg, but previously 25mg) for about 12 years. I have been recently diagnosed as having gout. Is there any chance that the long duration of being on Atenolol could have given rise to gout since I do not drink any alcohol and eat little beef?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

There are some medications that increase the risk of gout but Atenolol is not known to be one of these medications though persons react differently to medications.

Alcohol and beef are not the only foods that can trigger gout, other causes include: some fish (sardines, shrimp, anchovies etc), juices, sodas, liver. These are only some of the triggering foods.

You may need to review your diet to see if any of these are included.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care.

Regards,
