Is Hair Loss Caused By Hypothyroidism?

Hi there, diagnosed with hypothyroidism roughly 21/2 months ago and taking Eutroxsig. Recently noticed my hair had fallen out to the tune of 1/3 of my head...I had noticed my symptoms were not reducing so I increased my med from 50micrograms to 100 approx 2 weeks ago (the specialist suggested I may need this, but I have not been back to another $400 since previous diagnosis consult)...will the hair loss stop, should I change meds? It falls oust all over, not in one spot Kate

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Hypothyroidism causes hair loss also. It is important to have your TSH levels checked and find out from physician whether you need to adjust dosage or not. Also check your food for goitrogens.

Cabbage, millets, cauliflower, peanuts are goitrogens. For good hair health check for dandruff and take iron rich and protein rich food. Choose a good quality shampoo and reduce chemical exposure to hair which will also contribute to hair health.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
