Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi. I am a 49 year old perimenopausal female who weights 139 pounds and 5 5 . Diagnosed with thick endometrium last year and put on Provera and Prometrium now with thinning of endometrium and biopsy negative. At GYN exam this year found an enlarged thyroid and had negative T4 and TSH and negative antibodies. PCP checked and said do have a small goiter but goiter is small and smooth and is sending me for an ultrasound. I am so scared what this could be. Please try to give me some reassurance that this is most likely nothing serious. I am so scared. PCP said he did not feel any nodules. Thank you.
There is nothing to worry from the details given so far. Most of the thyroid swellings at this age are caused by multi nodular goitre- a totally innocuous condition. We take it serious if the swelling is hard to touch, painful, surrounding neck glands (lymph nodes) are enlarged or the overlying skin is distorted. Just be relaxed and get the ultrasound done, which I expect to show nothing other than few nodules within.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
