Hello,
These are the possible explanations for the elevated heart rate:
1) If your mother is on calcium channel blockers, a type of anti-hypertensive, they could produce a condition called
reflex tachycardia, where the heart rate goes up.
2) If your other has heart problems, it is possible that the heart is compensating for a weak heart, by increasing the number of times it beats to provide adequate blood to the body.
3) Eliquis is a medicine that helps prevents clots and as sequelae, can predispose one to bleed. Bleeding itself can cause an elevated heart rate. If her blood pressure is normal at this point, it is unlikely to be due to bleeding.
4) An
arrhythmia can cause elevation of the heart rate
Advise: Do not worry. Check the heart rate again after a while. 108 is only a borderline elevation of the heart rate, with the normal range being 60-100/min.
If you are excessively concerned or if you feel like your mother's condition is seeming to worsen, you could visit your regular physician.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Pranav Balakrishnan, General & Family Physician
