Is Heaviness And Swelling In The Jaw Joint Related To Hypothyroidism?
Hello Sir. I am suffering from repeat bouts of heaviness in the rightward joint of my jaw with apparent swelling. There is are teeth emanating from both the jaws in the same side as also with a recently detected case of hypothyroidism and associated symptoms as in swelling of the neck and throat, macroglossia, scalloped tongue and halitosis among the oral symptoms. I have begun prescribed medication three days ago on 12.5mcg of thyroxine to be increased to 25mcg from the day after tomorrow. Are the wisdom teeth afflicting the jaw causing the aforementioned discomfort and is there any correlation between impacted wisdom teeth and hypothyroidism?
The symptoms of having heaviness on the right jaw joint with apparent swelling can be most probably be due to either of the 2 causes:
-Jaw joint disorder.
-Swelling in the parotid gland. The chances of the swelling being due to the wisdom tooth or thyroid are less and wisdom tooth related problem does not have any specific connection with the hypothyroid state.
So it is advisable to consult an Oral Physician and get evaluated and a thorough clinical examination and investigation like X-ray can be done to rule out the exact cause of the swelling and heaviness.
For now, you can do cool compresses over it. If there is pain or discomfort during opening the mouth then do not force to open the mouth wide. Take soft meals.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
