Is Hematuria In The Elderly A Serious Cause For Concern?
Sandra Watkins - YYYY@ YYYY I am a 69 year old female , I have been having occasional bleeding in my urine. I told my Rheumatologist about it at my 3 month appt. and he sent me to the lab to have my urine tested ( I wasn t spotting at that time) lab sat blood in urine was within normal limits. But it has happened 3 more times since then. It is not vaginal, but seems to be happing regularly,.
After going through your query I understand your concern.
I would like to tell you that some general causes for hematuria are Urinary Tract Infection, bladder or kidney stones, cancer, kidney injury or medications. Renal disease are common in patients with rheumatic disease and antirheumatic drugs causes renal toxicity.
Kindly get you Renal function test and ultrasound abdomen and consult with a Urologist for further evaluation and management.
Rheumatologist cannot help too much with blood in urine. Please send the most recent report of your urine analysis to evaluate the changes there.
If the blood is fresh, then, it is due to possible vaginal spotting. Vaginal swab testing and Pap smear testing is further recommended.
Otherwise, kidney stones should be ruled out. Abdominal ultrasound should be further carried out.
Take cranberry supplements. Hope this helps.
