Is Hepatitis-C A Contagious Disease?

Hi, I just found out that my ex husband has hepatitis c. He is an recovering addict and did use intravenous drugs. Can I catch it from him. He does not know how long he has had it. And I have not slept with him in over a year in a half. I have had a hysterectomy a little over a year ago. Is this something they check for when they do your blood work up for that? I also have a six year old daughter and a 2 year old daughter by him do they check for Hep C when you have the work up for pregnancy?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanksfor the query. I understand your concern.
Hepatitis c does not spread throughfood, water orcasual contact.
It spreads through body fluids or blood of an infected person (by prick by an infected needle, unprotected sex woth an infected person, blood transfusion or organ transplant or from an infected mother to Baby at the time of birth.)
Your babies could not have received it from infected father.... (as it is carried via infected fluids of mother at the time of birth)....but if you had it before child birth .. they may get it.
Hepatitis c can be diagnosed by blood test... so you should get yourself checked for thedisease by blood test.&If you are +ve get both of your daughters also tested for the infection followed by needful specific treatment for 3 of you.
If you don't have +ve blood test .. you need not bother as you did not have sexual relations with him...&take care till he is free from it.
Thanks.
