Is High Levels Of HDL Cholesterol A Cause For Concern?

My mom just got a check up and found out that she has low LDL cholesterol and very high HDL cholesterol levels, (200 mg/dl) which is the good cholesterol . I m trying to find out if it is bad or concerning to have very high HDL cholesterol. All the information and articles I looked up were regarding how to raise HDL levels and lower LDL cholesterol. There are very few articles regarding if it is dangers to have too high HDL cholesterol. Thanks.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I think her lab findings should be correlated with the medications she is taking currently.

If on statins then this explains this increase in HDL. Can discuss with your caring doctor about stopping statins and observe changes in cholesterol levels.

That is really abnormal level of HDL but genetic factors should consider. So observatory studies of your cholesterol levels should run to understand their changes for the next 3 or 6 months.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care
