Is Inter Menstrual Bleeding Normal While On Trimethoprim?
21 years old, 5 5 , 62kg, asthmatic. currently taking trimethoprim for a UTI. history of recurring UTIs. i have started having small amounts of intermenstrual bleeding after being on trimethoprim for a couple of days. is this normal? the amount of blood seems to have increased over the past two days.
There is no documented relationship between trimethoprim and inter-menstrual bleeding. However any infection/inflammation of cervix or vagina, may also cause inter-menstrual bleeding. Episodes of recurrent UTI in your case might also have caused an infection of vagina or cervix and hence bleeding.
Some times use of trimethoprim may cause a change in bacterial environment of cervix and vagina due to its action on beneficial bacteria also, thus causing inflammation of vaginal or cervical region and hence inter-menstrual bleeding. Besides this ,other normal causes like use of hormonal contraceptives may be also taken into consideration.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
