Is Iron Deficiency A Side Effect Of Cholecystectomy?

I had a cholecystectomy in October 2013 with a ERCP. I have since developed microcytosis and low iron. I eat meat, have no GI symptoms, no known blood loss and just had a normal colonoscopy. Could the cholecystectomy offer an explanation for the development of iron deficiency?

Hi,

The iron deficiency can be cause for gall stone. But reverse is not true.

So if you have iron deficiency anemia than cholecystectomy is not the cause.

The microcyte is not sole marker of Iron deficiency anemia.

You need to investigate further with serum ferritin and hemoglobin estimation.

Hope I have answered your question.

Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards
