Hello, and I hope I can help you today.
Women can have irregular bleeding for even up to 6 to 8 weeks after normal delivery. In women who are breast-feeding, most will not menstruate at all and only have some
pinkish spotting on-and-off or even up to six months. However most women who do not breast-feed will get the first menstrual cycle after the delivery in about 4 to 6 weeks.
It is completely normal for your first menstrual cycle to be heavier, last longer, and appear different than your previous periods. The blood that is passed in the first days to six weeks after birth is known as
lochia, and it normally is dark red or even purplish brown. Your menstrual cycle will likely return to the way it was before the baby after you have completely stopped breast-feeding at of had at least three cycles.
So in summary, the bleeding symptoms you have experienced are completely normal in the first few months after birth. You should see your delivering provider for an appointment about six weeks after the birth for recheck to make sure that everything else is normal. You should not have intercourse or place anything in the vagina until your six week postpartum checkup. If you had a
vaginal delivery, and had any stitches, is also recommended that you avoid anal penetration as well.
I hope that I was able to adequately answer your question today, and that my advice was helpful.
Best wishes,
Dr. Brown
