Is Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) Related With Stomach Ache And Diarrhea In Children?

My 3 year old daughter has regular stomach ache and when she has an episode her stools are yellowy Brown in colour and slightly loose but not what you might call diarrhoea. She is never sick, is tall and well grown for her age and developing normally. The stomach aches occur 2-3 times a week. Her GP has checked and said no constipation or other abnormalities. Could it be IBS or some good more complicated. Thanks a lot

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your daughter have symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) which could be related with stomach ache and diarrhea which seems to be due to acute gastroenteritis caused by viral infection. It could be due to electrolyte imbalance in body. Need not to worry. I would suggest you not to panic at all. Drink plenty of fluids to rehydrate yourself. Visit general physician once and get it examined. You should go for blood tests as well and start treatment after proper examination. You should give Ibuprofen along with proton pump inhibitors as well. You should start treatment with combination of fluoroquinolones and ornidazole. Give him banana on daily basis and light food. Avoid taking any sharp and spicy food.
