Is It A Matter Of Concern That MRI Shows Chronic Microvascular Ischemia After Radiation Treatment For Acoustic Neuroma?

I had radiation treatment for an acoustic neuroma a few years ago and have had annual MRIs ever since. The latest MRI report notes chronic microvascular ischemia ; previous reports didn t use that term although all referred to abnormally long TR signals. My neurotologist never mentioned this. I m 55 and don t have high blood pressure or diabetes (although my father has both). Should I be concerned?

Hello there,

Post radiation changes in the brain parenchyma surrounding the treated portion will show fibrosis or more particularly termed gliosis.
It will appear just like chronic ischemic change in mri. Although not necessarily a primary ischemic nature, the function of this portion is more or less affected just like in vascular problem.
So it is just the term but not necessarily the cause, since functionality and imaging findings are similar,.
Thank you

Dr. Eric
