Is It Advisable To Switch From Absorica To Claravis?

My 16 year old son is in his 6th month of Absorica, 40mg. His doctor just increased his dose to 80mg in an effort to get him finished sooner. He should only have two more months if he can tolerate the 80mg dose. At the same time our health care coverage is changing and we are not sure the new plan will cover Absorica, so the pharmacy suggested Claravis as an alternative. I m concerned about switching this late in his treatment, especially while increasing dosage. Is this advisable? I believe it s the same active ingredient, but aren t there still risks in switching?

Hi,

You are right, that both of these are the same ingredients that is isotretinoin. The daily dose of isotretinoin is 0.5 mg to 1 mg / Kg body weight / day. However, in severe nodular acne, this dosage may be up to 2 mg / Kg body weight / day. Therefore, depending on his body weight, this dose can be definitely increased to 80 mg / day, if it is well tolerated.

As, I have told that these are the same ingredients, therefore, there should not be any problem in switching from one to another. Though, the choice of prescription of one or the other, out of these two depends on the preference and experience of the prescribing doctor. Still, analyzing the reviews, Claravis has more better reviews than Absorica.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
