Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is it an emergency if you have black tarry vomit? My boyfriend got sick threw up several times. Around the fifth time he threw up bright red blood. After dry heaving a few times he threw up a black tarry substance. He chews tobacco and the night before he had gutted his chew.
Hi, black tarry vomit could be due to the gutted chew or internal bleeding mixing with acid. Vomitting with blood is uncommon and indicates a tear somewhere in the esophagus or stomach. Tear inside could have lead to blood loss in stomach and after mixing with acid could have led to black tarry vomit. Unless vomit is examined, difficult to say the cause. If there is associated dizziness, then its definitely an emergency or if vomitting continues, then again it could be an emergency. An Upper gastrointestinal endoscopy might be necessary to rule out any internal bleed. If symptoms exaggerate or persist, go to the doctor at once.
