Is It Dangerous To Take Thyroid Support Dosage Of Potassium Iodide?
I have taken a thyroid supplement for many years. (levothyroxin 88 mcg once a day) My personal physician felt my thyroid quite firmly in my neck and said my thyroid has shrunk but that was common after taking it for many years (about 35 yrs.) My regular physician has moved, so this is a different highly recommended internist as the other one was. But never have I been told this before. Would it be helpful or dangerous to take a thyroid support dosage of potassium iodide (150 mcg of iodine per drop) in hopes all the symptoms would be somewhat alleviated? Thank you, Lorraine E. Peterson
Hello Ms. Peterson, You are on a hefty dose of levothyroxin. Please do not take any iodine. You are saying you still have symtomes of low thyroid. Your doctor can test for antibodies against your active thyroid hormones or you could try a few foods with selenium in it as selenium is responsible for converting the inactive T4 found in the medicine to the active form of T3 in the tissues. Also, make certain you take your thyroid medication on an empty stomach 1/2 hour before eating or 2 hours after without any other pills or vitamins or food. Thank you for coming to HCM.
