Hi,I am Neethu Vipin (Dietitian & Nutritionist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Is It Normal To Experience Increased Hunger And Protein Cravings After A Hysterectomy, And Will These Cravings Affect My Weight Loss Goals?
I am 52 and had a hysterectomy three weeks ago due to prolapsed bladder. I have been post menopausal for 4 years and I still have my ovaries. I have noticed the last few days I am really hungry and craving protein. I don’t feel full after eating. Is this normal? I don’t want to put on weight as I have lost 90lbs in the last few years. Hopefully the protein cravings will stop soon?
There is no physiological reason for your increased hunger after the hysterectomy. If you crave protein, your body needs it to repair tissues after the surgery. If you don't feel full after eating, combine a higher fiber intake with lean protein consumption. To avoid gaining weight, focus on eating low-fat sources of dairy and meat and avoiding fried foods. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and whole grains are sources of fiber; try to get 28 grams of fiber per day.
Your protein intake should be about 1.2 grams/kg/day. If you are exercising (and you should be working out 150 minutes per week), you may need even more protein on strength training days (2 days per week). It is difficult to answer your question without knowing your weight and protein needs per day and how much you are eating. When your protein needs are being met, your cravings should go away.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
