Is It Normal To Get Hot Flashes, Tiredness And Diarrhea After The Intake Of Atenolol?

Hey im takin atenolol 50 for hypertension i was takin it for about a month,im 41 years old im havin hot flashes,tiredness and i will have to go straight to the bathroom with diaharria,cant sleep at nite when i do fall asleep i wake up in the middle of the nite hot sometimes my head/brains get real hot it last bout 2 minutes i put a cold towel over my forehead it goes away i just be tired alot i was diagois with hypertension in dec.of last year didnt had a gud nite of rest while takin atenolol is this normal?

Hi ! Good evening. I am Dr Shareef answering your query.

Although the symptoms you narrated are possible as a side effect of atenolol, I would advise my patients not to discontinue the drug all of a sudden. Instead, if the symptoms are not severe enough, they should continue with the medicines, and gradually these symptoms might wean off. Otherwise, the patient should consult his treating physician either to adjust the dosage or to substitute this some other medications.
