Is It Normal To Have Black Stool Throughout My Pregnancy?
Hi I m 29 year old and about 15 weeks pregnant. Ever since I found out I was pregnant I started getting black loose stool as I am taking elevit with iodine. Is it normal to have black stool throughout my pregnancy because it hasn t changed back to normal yet and I was also wondering what it means?
Hi, When iron is taken in the diet, it is common to have black stool as it is excreted. Since you are taking the medication that contains iron in addition to iodine, you are seeing black stool. Iron may also cause constipation or diarrhea. So, this is not a reason to worry about. Yet, if you are having inconvenience, please ask your consultant to change the preparation with lesser side effects. Once iron is stopped in the diet or as a supplement, the color of the stool changes to normal within a couple of days. Hope you find this information useful. Wish you good health.
