Is It Normal To Have Delayed Periods While Taking Birth Control Pills?

Hi, so, around the end of December I had been very "active" because my boyfriend was in for Christmas and he is in the service. I was on birth control but I wasn't taking it regularly, like I would miss a day and take it the next, but we were also using condoms. He left January fifth and I had a period January 18-21. I am normally a 28 day cycle. Well after I started my period I also quit taking the pills all together (keep in mind I was never really regular on taking the pills) and now I am a week late for this period but tests keep coming back negative. I was just curious as to what could be going on. Thanks!

Hi,

Welcome to health care magic.

I understand that you have been taking pills irregularly and also used condoms. If the condoms were used every time and there was no tear in the condoms, chances of pregnancy are very low.

You also had a period in January after the whole episode. So there is no chance of pregnancy. The most likely possibility is that the periods are delayed due to irregular birth control pills. They may have caused a minor imbalance in the natural rhythm of hormones and periods are delayed.

Another reasons for this are ovarian cysts, thyroid and prolactin abnormalities. They are less likely in your case. Stress also delays periods.

I suggest that please do not worry. You had a period, you used condoms and your urine tests are negative. So this is not due to pregnancy.

Wait for a few more days say around 2 - 3 weeks. If there are no periods then you will need to get tested further for any other cause.

Hope this satisfies your query.
