Is It Normal To Have Long, Heavy Periods After Taking First Shot Of Depo?
Hello, I have had the depo shot injected in the middle of Nov 2014. I got my period around Thanksgiving and I am still on my cycle till this day. I will not be getting my second shot due to the long term periods and mood swings. How long will my period last now that I won't get the second shot and how long will it take for the medication to leave my body ?
Hello and welcome to HCM, menstrual irregularities occur after taking Depo shot however, it is unusual for the periods to continue for such long duration. The Depo shot releases the hormone in very small pulses over a period of 6 months. However, continuous periods are not expected at after its injection. I suggest you to consult your gynecologist for clinical assessment, relevant investigations and thus management. An ultrasound of pelvis and endometrial biopsy may be required to assess the status of endometrium. Next shot of Depo should be withheld till this problem continues.
Thanks and take care Dr Shailja Puri
