Is It Possible To Have A Kidney Stone And Not Have Infection In Urine Sample?

Is it possible to have a kidney stone but not have any blood or infection in your urine sample? My pain started in my right side, radiated across my lower back and across my abdomen. The immediate care Dr. said the urine sample was clear and my blood sample showed my white count was a little high but not enough to raise red flags. My pain level is better tonight but I'm experiencing a nagging ache in my back in the area of my right kidney.

Hi
Thank you for asking HCM
I have gone through your query.Your condition is an acute abdomen. So it has to be investigated.Kidney stone can be silent till it attain bigger size.So it is possible not to have an infection with stones. As you are having right sided pain acute appendicitis should be ruled out.An ultrasound examination of abdomen and pelvis is essential to arrive to final conclusion.Hope this may help you.
Let me know if you have any further query.

Usually a kidney stone will show only signs of blood and not infection in the urine. If an infection develops in the presence of a kidney or bladder stone, the stone can complicate treatment and make it difficult to be cured.

I think you want to know if it is possible to have a kidney stone and not show any blood in the urine. This is unusual but does occasionally happen - it requires that the stone totally block the flow of urine from the affected side, so no urine containing any blood gets to the bladder. Total blockage of urine flow on one side does cause steady and increasing pain in the side, back and abdomen (less sharp and less severe than passing stone, but more of a steady continuous pain). If blockage remains, the kidney will atrophy and stop working.

Best test to evaluate for such blockage is a renal ultrasound, which will show telltale signs of pressure on the kidney, and may identify the location of the stone.

Good luck,
