Is It Safe For A Woman In 40s To Take BP Medications Along With Birth Control?

Hi. I recently switched from Loestrin 1/20 to Cyclafem 1/35 to control abnormal uterine bleeding that is related to perimenopause (I am 44). The new meds are working like a charm (much to my relief). But, it seems that my blood pressure has increased. With a family history of High blood pressure, I have drastically changed my lifestyle over the last four years. I do not eat red meat, am mostly vegetarian (chicken about 5 times a year), focus on whole grains and low-fat options, and use fat free milk and cheese products. I also exercise 30 min per day 5 or six times a week (walking, elliptical, and yoga). If all of this hasn t helped my BP, I suspect meds are needed. Is it safe for a woman in her 40s to take birth control bills AND blood pressure meds?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Thank you for asking on HealthcareMagic.com, providing better healthcare for you. I would congratulate & encourage you for your diet and physical activity. These general measures promote a healthy life, also they are recommended for perimenopause symptoms and to reduce high blood pressure and to prevent heart attack. Yes, it is safe for a woman in her 40's to take birth control pills and drugs to lower blood pressure, when diet and physical activity isn't enough to control high blood pressure. Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions. Wishing you good health.
