Is It Safe To Continue Metoprolol After These Results From Stress Test And CT Scan?
Hi! I was put on Metoprolol (low dose)after a stress test showed slight blockage. After having a ct scan which showed over 50% blockage I went ahead with an angiogram which showed no blockage at all. All tests have shown that my heart is healthy. Why should I continue to take this medication and how can I wean myself off i?
First of all, you shouldn't take any treatment decisions without consulting with your doctor. I don't know why your doctor prescribed Metoprolol to you, so I can't comment against its use. If your heart is indeed healthy and you do not need Metoprolol then I'm sure your doctor will advise you accordingly. Please keep in mind that beta-blockers (like Metoprolol) cannot be stopped cold turkey.
A more gradual approach is required guided by your doctor. My personal preference is to reduce the dosage every week or so. Some patients may develop tachycardia when reducing the dosage of beta-blockers too fast. This is particularly so, in patients who use high doses or for a long time (or both).
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Panagiotis Zografakis, Internal Medicine Specialist
