Hi,
It is not safe to use steroid continuously for SLE. I suggest you to take
hydroxychloroquine along with non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as naproxen or
aceclofenac. If there is no response to these medicines your doctor might add immuno-suppressive like
methotrexate for the long term management of SLE.
It is proved that steroids are one of the most effective treatment for SLE for reducing the swelling, pain, and tenderness associated with inflammation. However, on long term use they are known to cause a number of undesirable side effects such as
hypertension, increased blood sugar, swelling of the limbs, weight gain,
osteoporosis and increased risk of infection. So they are usually prescribed only when other medications do not work.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
