Is It Safe To Continue Taking Lunesta Instead Of Ambien?

My doc switched me from ambien to lunesta. But the lunesta just is not working nearly as good as the ambien for sleep on days when i cant fall asleep. So I had been getting 10, Ambien 10mg, a month and it worked great. Now i get 10, 1mg of Lunesta a month and I find it useless. So I consutled with my new Doc and he bumped the dosage up to 2mg, but still no change. I even took a total of 3mg of Lunesta one night to see if it would help but still not enough sleep. He is not willing to switch me back to ambien so what should i do? But I still have a few ambien 10mg leftover, Should I try taking 2 mg of Lunesta and wait a little bit then split one of my 10mg ambien to make it 5mg. So Basically what I m asking is that is it ok to combine both of those drugs I have prevously been taking about together but at slightly different times at the same night. Also are thos two medications synergistic, additive or effect eachother in any other ways? Thanks in advance, Michael

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

It is not advisable to take these two medications together. Both Lunesta and Ambien belong to "Z-drugs" and are equally effective in the treatment of insomnia.

Taking Ambien together with Lunesta produce additive depression of the central nervous system with increased side effects such as dizziness, drowsiness, confusion, difficulty concentrating, and motor incoordination.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
