Is It Safe To Continue Taking Seroquel For Dementia?
My Mom is 92 and has dementia. She is very fearful of falling and has a persistent rubbing motion with her hands on her thighs. She has started on Seroquel, but I ve been reading that is not a good drug for dementia patients. Is there a better/safer drug that might help her?

General & Family Physician, Dr. Sirisha's Response
The drugs are often used to calm down dementia patients who can become agitated and behave aggressively. Seroquel carries a lower risk for death than other second-generation like resperidone, oleanzapine and first generation antipsychotic drugs like haloperidol . many conditions may contribute to agitation and aggression in patients with dementia, so it is important to conduct a full assessment to look for these causes before antipsychotic drugs are prescribed.but this kind of dementia patients are prescribed with anti psychotics from a very long time.ensure her diet and try to take a second psychiatrist opinion regarding your doubt of using seroquel.
