Is It Safe To Continue With Metopropol And Atenolol For Raised BP Levels?
My Dad had been taking metoprolol 50mg and Atenolol 50 mg for about 5 months. This seemed to control his BP pretty well.He started seeing a new PCP who changed his meds cause they both belong to the same class. They don t seem to control his BP. His reading have been up the roof, 200 s/100 s. Would it be advisable to continue his previous regimen? He has had a lot of side effects with the new meds prescribed to replace atenolol.

General & Family Physician, Dr. Nishad BN's Response
Hi Thank you for asking HCM. I have gone through your query. Metoprolol and atenolol belong to same class and usually not given together. He can be put on Angiotensin receptor blocker or calcium channel blocker along with metoprolol. You should approach your physician again for readjustment in your medication. The high BP should be most likely a rebound hypertension due to sudden stopping of beta blocker. Also can increase the dosage of betablocker using any one of it. But a combination from another group will be necessary. Hope this may help you. Let me know if anything not clear. Thanks.
